I applied online for an auto loan with Capital One Auto Finance (capitalone.com/autoloans) and got approved for a low rate. They sent me a Blank Check that I can just sign over to the car dealer and cut out the usual auto financing hassles. It lets me negotiate like a cash buyer and ensure a low auto loan rate. It almost seems to good to be true. Has anyone else had favorable or unfavorable experiences with Capital One online auto loans? Thanks!

I really don't like those deals and would suggest that you consider a separate account that you deposit your payments into. Otherwise, if they make a mistake and take too much from your account, you will be fighting them to get it resolved. If all you have in the separate account is the amount of your payment (or a little extra), they won't be able to screw it up.

You MAY have to go back a couple steps. By that I mean the car you're "in love" with may have "to be put on a back burner".
Suggestion #1: Ask the seller of the car you're "in love with", if he/she/they will do the following for you and work with you:
1] DON'T haggle or bargain about the price.
2] BUT ask the seller if he/she/they will hold the title AND YOU WILL sign an I.O.U. for whatever amount you can pay - with interest - on a weekly, two times a month or monthly basis.
OR Suggestion #2: look in your local paper or take a ride, looking for a car for sale by a private individual or private party. Ask the seller of that vehicle about what I suggested in the previous paragraph.

Because my credit union lost all my direct deposit account info when I initially set up an auto loan, I physically make my payments there each month. I always pay cash.
But can I simply write a check for the amount due and hand it to the teller? Is that acceptable? It would save me a trip to my other bank each month.

The Treasury announced on December 30 it would invest a further $4 billion in GMAC, in the form of a total of $2.67 billion of super-senior securities and $1.31 billion of mandatory convertible preferred stock. Prior to the announcement, the Treasury already owned $13.1 billion of preferred stock, and 35% of the total common stock - it will now convert $3 billion worth of its existing preferred stock, giving it a 56% ownership stake, and allowing it to appoint four of GMAC's nine directors. It will change another $5.25 billion of preferred stock into mandatory convertible preferred stock, which counts as Tier 1 capital and will allow GMAC to eliminate the capital shortage the Treasury's capital assessment programme identified in May 2009.
But the investment represents a significantly smaller commitment than was originally expected - in May, the Treasury said it expected to invest $5.6 billion in order to deal with GMAC's capital shortfall, but the failed car manufacturers GM and Chrysler were ultimately restructured more easily than it predicted, reducing the disruptive effect on GMAC.
